How do we want to use language tomorrow? Podcast #13 feat. Kübra Gümüşay

Published August 20, 2020

From now on, you’ll be able to listen to our dulcet tones again every month! Yep, that’s right, we’re launching the second series of “Über Morgen” – and the special guest in our first episode is Kübra Gümüşay, who talked to us about the power of language.

A new series, new topics and new guests: our “Über Morgen” podcast is entering its next round. Because we want to continue providing you with even more food for thought as to how we can shape our future – and how we want to live tomorrow.

And that’s not the only news to report: our loyal listeners will know that Jakob was joined by the wonderful Anna Schunck from “Viertel Vor” magazine in the first series. As Anna is now moving onto pastures (or projects!) new, we’d like to take this opportunity to give her a big shoutout and say a massive thank you for twelve fantastic episodes! So for this new series Jakob has brought our lovely colleague Silvi on board, who along with her wonderfully raspy voice, also brings a wealth of podcast experience to the table.

As their first guest, they are joined in the studio by none other than bestselling author and sought-after speaker Kübra Gümüşay who is known for broaching topics such as feminism, racism, cyberculture and cultural diversity and regularly sparks debates about structural problems. She is also co-initiator of the hashtags #Schauhin (to encourage people not to look away from everyday racism) and #Ausnahmslos (which calls for action against sexism and racism – without exception). “Sprache und Sein” (Language and Being) is the title of her eloquently written book about language – and how it comes across, how much power it has and why we should be taking a much more sensitive approach to it than we have in the past.

We are all surrounded by language on a daily basis. It forms our perception of the world, our interactions with others, our self-image – and words can become deeds. So how can we move away from discriminatory language and put the focus on matters that are close to our own hearts? And why is it so important to speak about a good future if we want to make it happen? You can find out the answers to all those questions and more right here. Enjoy listening!
